I love the simple significance of Ezra Taft Benson Chapter 8: The Power of the Word. As Satan is waging war against us, President Benson gives us a clear, direct answer to the challenges we face- the scriptures- our manual to life.
The scriptures must be an integral part of our daily lives. Do we think about them often? Have we tried telling some of the stories or verses in our own words? Is there a particular scripture we have memorized to help us through the day? Do we actually search the scriptures instead of just reading them? Are we writing things down during our daily study? Do we value them as much as we should? I loved President Benson's point:
There are some things that will and only can come through reading the scriptures and applying them to our lives. Nephi set such a great example of this. He listen to the words of a prophet, studied the scriptures after they received them, then applied the words to his family's lives. Laman and Lemuel give us a clear glimpse of what happens when we don't put the scriptures a priority in our lives. They didn't ask for understanding and thus ended up resisting much of what they were supposed to be doing. How much simpler would their lives have been if only they had decided to cling to the scriptures like Nephi did. Our lives can be simple too if we hold on to the word of God- not necessary easy but simple.
